Door County, Wisconsin Adventure with Anita & Dave

Framed by 300 miles of scenic shoreline, Door County, Wisconsin offers inland seaside (Green Bay to the west and Lake Michigan to the east) experiences in the heart of the Midwest. Door County is to the mid-west as Martha Vineyard is to the East Coast - a unique concentration of natural landscapes, orchards, vineyards, recreation, local cuisine and accommodations matched with an abundance of hiking and bicycling trails. Take a look as Anita & David Knechel and Kent & Sarah Sweitzer walk, hike, bike and explore the communities and terrain around Fish Creek and the Peninsula State Park during the post Labor Day period of September September 4th - 7th, 2013. Photographer notes: With the exception of six photos (orchard & vineyard) I used a compact Canon PowerShot SX230HS (12.1 Megapixel & 14X optical zoom) due to its light-weight and compact size - perfect for hiking & biking.

  • In 1978 the Church of the Atonement celebrated its first One Hundred Years.
  • Nancy Latener invites us to join her in the church. I had asked for permission to photograph the exterior.
  • Mrs. Latener was pleased with our interest in seeing and learning about the church and its unique history - it's a Mission Church and is only open during the summer months.
  • Interior of the 70 person capacity Church of the Atonement.
  • The small church has seating capacity for a maximum of 70. Until eight years ago there was no electricity. The natural light is peaceful and softens the interior.

  • For most of its existence the Church of the Atonement had neither electricity or an organ. However, within the last eight years, electricity has been added for supplemental lighting and an electric organ.
  • Mrs. Latener shows us the details of the handmade needlepoint knelling pads.
