Memorial Excursion to Wendell's Funeral

My oldest brother Wendell died early in the morning on Sunday, December 9th 2012 surrounded by family members. He died in the A-frame house which he constructed largely by himself, using heavy stone and timbers from barns and houses which were no longer in use. On the way to and from my formative roots world of Glen Rock, Shrewbury, and New Freedom we passed through Washington Reagan National Airport, fully decked for the holiday season. My brother is buried in the Bowsers Cemetery, New Freedom, Pennsylvania, near the New Freedom Church of the Brethren, surrounded by many Sweitzer generations and other early settlers in the area, including native Americans and civil war veterans. The journey continues while our memories remain with some of those on the Bowsers' hill and a solidly built A frame along a creek and all of those that have been with us on the journey.

Washington Reagan National Airport

  • Washington Reagan National Airport
  • A large overhead flag - almost as large as the Christmas tree in the airport.

  • Supporting structure with light portals
  • Reflections of the red, white and blue upon the marble floor.
  • Beth's wonderful friend, and now ours also, Bobbie Friedman from Washington D. C. provided us with first class limo transportation to and from our destinations.
  • This is the A frame by the creek where my brother Wendell and his wife Connie raised their two children Jason and Sharon.
  • Bright red welcoming door with Christmas wreath.
  • Stone masonary details demonstrate color, texture and variety of shapes and sizes.
  • Entrance to Bowsers Cemetery. Plans are underway to expand the perimeter for potential use by future generations.
  • New Freedom Church of the Brethren building in the woods (L). Building is still in use.
  • View from Bowsers Cemetary looking east toward New Freedom.
  • Sweitzer Family monument marker.
  • Future gravesite of Wendell Henry Sweitzer, adjacent to his parents and Grandparents burial lots.

  • William B. Sweitzer & Lamanda were my Great Grandparents, parents of Henry Z. Sweitzer. Much of the family story has been recorded and preserved in ancestory recordings by Gladys (Sweitzer) Smith, my cousin.
  • Here is where the parents of Wendell Henry Sweitzer, Anita Martin Sweitzer, Glenn Edward Sweitzer, Kent Allen Sweitzer and Beth Elaine Sweitzer-Riley are buried. Our Mother's nickname became "Momsie" as shown. She was born Grace Marie but subsequently changed her name to Marie Grace or Marie G. Sweitzer. Today her great granddaughter Ruth Grace is named after both of her Great Grandmothers - Marie Grace Eikenberry Sweitzer and Anna Ruth Neff (Longenecker) Haynes.
  • Our Uncle Sam and Aunt Mary are buried nearby. Samuel was the oldest of five children, followed by Paul, William (Uncle Bill), Carroll (my Dad) and Mary (Shaffer) Sweitzer. All are buried at Bowsers with the exception of Uncle Bill who lived in Virginia most of his life.
  • Paul E. Sweitzer is buried next to his parents (My Grandparents) Henry Z. Sweitzer and Martha M. Keeny Sweitzer. He died young due to injuries from an industrial canning factory accident in New Freedom, Pa. He was the second child of five children in my father's family.
  • For everything there is a season.
